Working with Your Healthcare Team

You are the most important part of your healthcare team

Your healthcare provider wants you to feel confident in the instructions they give you. If you know what you need to do and you know how it will help you feel better, you are more likely to make healthy changes in your lifestyle.

Start the conversation. The first step is letting someone know how you feel. If you notice changes in your body, your sleep, or your mood, talk to your healthcare provider.

Ask questions. There are a lot of medical words and ideas that can be hard to understand. Ask for help in knowing what something means. A good way to test if you understand your healthcare provider’s instructions is if you can repeat them to someone else.

Write down questions and other notes before your doctor visit to help you remember what you want to bring up at the visit. You can also write down or ask your healthcare provider to write down their answers and other instructions.

Bring a friend. Support from loved ones at an office visit can be a big help. They can help remember to ask questions you have.
