Nutrition Fiction: Healthy Eating Costs Too Much

There’s a lot of information out there about healthy eating. And, sometimes we get mixed messages when it comes to good nutrition. Today, we’re going to look at a common nutrition myth, and show you the truth behind it.

Now, I often hear people say, “I wish I could eat healthy, but it costs too much!” Well, buying healthy food does not have to cost a lot of money. I’m going to share with you a few of my favorite low-cost, nutritious foods that will help meet your health needs and add a boost to your favorite dishes. These foods don’t cost a lot of money but are filled with healthy nutrients.

Oats, canned tomatoes, canned beans, frozen vegetables, and onions and garlic

Now, here’s why.

Oats are high in fiber carbohydrate, or fuel for your body, that “sticks with you.” Eating oats for breakfast can help keep you full all the way until lunch.

They can also be used to make healthy granola snack bars and muffins. And they’re a great substitute for bread crumbs in recipes. Plus, eating oats may help lower your LDL, or bad cholesterol.

Next, we have canned tomatoes.

Did you know that canned tomatoes are high in fiber and contain more of the cancer-fighting nutrient lycopene than fresh tomatoes?

That’s because canning breaks down the cell wall of the tomato, leaving more of the lycopene free for your body to use. From soups and stews to sauces, canned tomatoes are handy.

Canned beans are on my list, too, because they’re filling, hearty and provide a great base for many affordable meals.

You can add beans to taco filling, burritos or chili to bulk up the protein for just pennies. Remember, protein foods tend to be some of the most expensive on our shopping list. So, canned beans are a low-cost way to go.

Frozen vegetables also make the list because they’re a good source of nutrients. Just remember: next to fresh, frozen is best. Plus, they’re affordable and can stay in your freezer for a while.

That way, you can use them when you want, unlike fresh veggies, which can go bad more quickly. With frozen vegetables, you save money by wasting less food.

Packed with important vitamins and minerals, frozen vegetables help give your body the fuel it needs. So be sure to put those on your grocery shopping list.

Finally, our last low-cost nutritious foods are onions and garlic.

They’re both high in antioxidants. Think of antioxidants as the police officers and fire-fighters of the body. They go around doing good things for your body, like fighting inflammation.

This power duo, onions and garlic, has the ability to flavor almost anything you’re cooking. No need for other expensive seasoning.

Eating healthy doesn’t have to cost a lot.

Stick with foods that give you the most nutritional bang for your buck, and keep it simple.
