People who are managing or recovering from mental illness often hear the word "reintegration." It refers to the steps involved with re-entering the community and getting back to living as normal a life as they can. Key to reintegration is the support of family, friends and mental health professionals.

Since 1996, Lilly has partnered with the Center for Reintegration to present Lilly Reintegration Awards and Scholarships. The goal of these programs is to recognize mental health professionals, family and friends of individuals with mental illness, and individual patients for their exceptional contributions and achievements in helping those battling serious mental illness.

Lilly Reintegration Awards

Since 1995, the Lilly Reintegration Awards have recognized approximately 175 individuals who are shining examples of recovery and resilience, as well as those who spend their lives providing treatment and support.  In 2012, Lilly is partnering with the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare to honor treatment teams, programs and services that provide assistance to individuals living with severe mental illness as they re-enter the community, as well as individuals with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia who provide hope and support to their peers. As part of the National Council Awards of Excellence Program, the Reintegration Awards also acknowledge local and national efforts to improve services and raise public awareness about the promise of reintegration for those affected. Award categories include advocacy, clinical medicine, employment, housing, social support, achievement and artistic contribution.

Lilly Reintegration Scholarships

The Lilly Reintegration Scholarship is designed to assist people with schizophrenia, related schizophrenia-spectrum disorders or bipolar disorder acquire the educational and vocational skills necessary to integrate into society, secure jobs and regain their lives. The Reintegration Scholarship is designed to offer financial assistance for a wide range of educational opportunities in which students work to attain a certificate or degree from an accredited institution.

Over the years, Lilly Reintegration Scholarships have supported 1,200 students. The program has funded scholars who successfully completed studies at Harvard University, Yale University, MIT, Rutgers, The Ohio State University, Washington State University, San Francisco State University, and hundreds of state universities and colleges, community colleges, trade schools and other institutions.
